Intelerad, Blackford collaborate on AI platform for images

The initiative seeks to save time and effort in deploying clinical imaging applications, says Ben Panter.

Intelerad Medical Systems and Blackford Analysis are working together to develop a platform that facilitates the use of artificial intelligence to analyze digital images in radiology.

Intelerad Medical Systems is a vendor of picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and medical imaging workflow solutions; Blackford Analysis is a vendor of software to process medical images.

Intelerad announced that it will make the Blackford Platform available to its customers. The Blackford Platform, which Blackford Analysis announced at RSNA 2017, will provide clinicians with a single platform to access and manage multiple image processing and analysis applications and AI algorithms from multiple vendors.

“It used to be extremely time-consuming for procurement, PACS administrators and IT departments to deploy new clinical imaging applications, as each one required extensive technology and workflow integration,” says Ben Panter, CEO of Blackford.

Intelerad said the Blackford Platform will be the first component of its clinical artificial intelligence offerings. Intelerad already has integrated Blackford’s 3D Cursor with its IntelePACS solution to automate the process of registering images.

When it is launched, Blackford Platform will allow access to myriad applications to automate the processing and analysis of medical images. Some of those applications include a portal to streamline access to medical 3D printing; an algorithm that prioritizes radiology workflows based on the detection of abnormal images; and software to monitor the progression of diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, in individual patients by measuring brain volumes in MRI images.
