Project of the Year, Patient Safety: Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

Analytics helps reduce central line-associated infections, pressure ulcers.

As one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin made significant efforts to decrease the number of preventable central line-associated bloodstream infections and pressure ulcers by 77 percent and 74 percent, respectively,

in the two years it took to incorporate a new analytics platform. Exposure to these two common conditions causes children to stay for an extended, costly time. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin created a culture of improvement through educational videos and training materials for its staff, with 4,500 employees completing error-prevention training.

The platform allowed the input of near real-time data in a visual format, which staff members used to develop new interventions. The hospital hopes to realize an 80 percent decrease in the serious safety event by December 2017.
