Wake Radiology implements platform for AI algorithms

The practice is using EnvoyAI and has implemented five image processing engines so far, says Matt Dewey.

Wake Radiology is implementing an artificial intelligence platform that can give its physicians access to a marketplace of 53 artificial intelligence engines that can be applied to medical imaging studies.

The platform, from EnvoyAI, will be used by the nearly 50 radiologists in the Raleigh, N.C.-based practice. It is the first customer installation for EnvoyAI.

Many experts believe that AI will have a large initial impact in radiology practices, but questions surround on how the algorithms can be quickly applied to imaging studies in existing workflows in busy radiology practices. The platform of artificial intelligence tools offered by EnvoyAI offers one potential approach to implementing these tools at scale.

Wake Radiology already has brought five of the imaging processing engines on the EnvoyAI platform to pre-production status, and it enables the algorithms to be used within the practice’s existing picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

“AI has great potential to improve healthcare by increasing our efficiency and efficacy as providers,” says William Way, MD, chief medical officer of the practice. “Implementing EnvoyAI gives our physicians an easy and integrated way to begin interacting with the wide variety of algorithms available…from directly within the PACS environment. Our radiologists can experiment and immediately apply algorithms that impact their workflow and patient care.”

The approach offers a cost-effective way to use AI algorithms that enables the practice to manage the acquisition and use of algorithms, says Matt Dewey, the practice’s chief information officer.

“What would have otherwise been a multitude of unacceptable implementation and security challenges resulting from purchasing algorithms separately has been simplified by a single turnkey platform,” Dewey says.

EnvoyAI executives say the platform facilitates the streamlined distribution and hospital implementation of trained machine learning algorithms via a vendor neutral distribution platform. EnvoyAI provides a developer platform, integration services and an open API for algorithm developers, technology partners, and end users.
