Two Vendor Acquisitions Further Consolidate HIT Field

Veteran health information technology vendors ADP AdvancedMD and Care Communications have new owners.

Giant data processing firm Automatic Data Processing, known as ADP, has owned physician ambulatory software vendor AdvancedMD since 2011. Now, Marlin Equity Partners has bought AdvancedMD, serving 17,500 practitioners and 500 billing firms, for an undisclosed sum and added the company to its portfolio of healthcare holdings.

Health IT companies in the portfolio include e-MDs (ambulatory EHR/PPM), Homecare CRM (customer relationship management), 6N Systems (long-term/post-acute care), SigmaCare (long-term/post-acute care), ExtraMed (patient flow), Hospedia (bedside communication), MDeverywhere (ambulatory revenue cycle), Qwik + Cross (Medicare clearinghouse) and Capario (clearinghouse), among others.

Raul Villar, who has worked at ADP for 26 years and ran ADP AdvancedMD, will continue as CEO of the company under Martin Equity. The deal is expected to close in the third or fourth quarters.

In May 2015, health information management vendor HealthPort bought HIM outsourcing firm IOD in a deal financed by HealthPort’s owner, New Mountain Capitol. Now, IOD will acquire HIM consulting firm Care Communications to add advisory services including ICD-10 transitioning to the mix. Terms were not disclosed.

Care Communications also has expertise with oncology data and clinical research services to extract meaningful information from structured and unstructured patient data. HealthPort and IOD serve 18,000 providers through more than 5,800 employees.
