Truven Health Analytics has made its second vendor acquisition in two weeks, buying Fortel Analytics, which specializes in predictive analytics to spot suspicious healthcare claims before they are paid.

In mid-April, Truven bought performance analytics firm Simpler Consulting--the first buy since Veritas Capital acquired the company in June 2012--and Truven CEO Mike Boswood said more deals would be coming. Now, the company picks up Fortel Analytics, which uses scoring models to review pre-payment claims and identify high-risk claims that should be denied payment or analyzed for further intervention.

The new service from Fortel complements existing Truven technology to retrospectively help insurers identify and reclaim funds that should not have been paid. Fortel will become part of Truven’s payment integrity solutions unit.

The acquisition of Simpler Consulting was targeted at helping providers and other healthcare organizations better identify the value in the data that they analyze. Truven has long offered analytics products enabling providers to measure their performance relative to peers and specific benchmarks. Simpler Consulting bolsters that service with a five-step process to enable providers, pharmaceutical firms and medical device companies to identify value and remove waste in business operations. The steps cover improved clinical processes, scheduling, morale, productivity and patient/safety satisfaction.
