Two agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services have introduced new Web-based health management tools for consumers.

The National Institutes of Health and launched NIH Clinical Research Trials and You, a Web site for consumers seeking to learn about the process of clinical trials. (A recent Health Data Management feature explores the role of social media in recruiting for clinical trials.) Information on the NIH site covers the basics of clinical trial participation, experiences from patients who have gone through trials, explanations of trials procedures from researchers, and links for searching and enrolling in a trial.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has added to its Hospital Compare Web site the rates of central line-associated bloodstream infections occurring in hospital intensive care units across the nation. The government estimates 41,000 such infections occurred in 2009, and about a quarter of patients died from the infections.
