The number of accountable care organizations participating in Medicare shared savings programs has reached 154, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

That includes 89 new ACOs that started on July 1 and anticipate serving 1.2 million Medicare beneficiaries in 40 states and the District of Columbia. In total, the 154 ACOs serve 2.4 million Medicare beneficiaries.

About half of the ACOs are physician-driven organizations with less than 10,000 beneficiaries. ACOs participating in Medicare shared savings programs must meet 33 quality measures covering care coordination and patient safety, preventive medicine, at-risk populations, and patient care experience.

The application period for organizations wishing to participate in shared savings programs during 2013 is from Aug. 1 through Sept. 6. More information is available here.
