Electronic health records vendor Medsphere Systems Corp. has made available on the open source market its File Manager database management system, called Medsphere FileMan.

Medsphere, which sells a commercialized version of the Veterans Administration VistA EHR, contributed the database system to the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent, or OSEHRA, a collaborative that includes the vendor as well as Document Storage Systems Inc., the Indian Health Service, WorldVistA and the VistA Expertise Network. Document Storage Systems also recently contributed to OSEHRA a patient search tool to find specific free text data within an EHR.

Medsphere’s FileMan is an enhancement of the VA’s file management system with fixed bugs and new capabilities such as an internationalized data dictionary. It is backwards-compatible with any database created in VA FileMan. More information is available at osehra.org.
