InterSystems, Rhodes Group join to ease specimen collections

A new cloud-based application has been built to streamline specimen collecting, tracking and labeling, while also automating laboratory receiving and processing procedures.

The application is eMyLabCollect from health information technology vendor InterSystems and Rhodes Group, a specialized laboratory software company.

eMyLabCollect is targeting reference labs and large regional hospitals with multiple hospital information systems and laboratory information systems.

InterSystems and Rhodes Group say eMyLabCollect is independent of any particular lab or hospital information system and can integrate with any system via HL7 messages. This enables specimen collection to flow from settings inside and outside the hospital, including long-term care and home care locations.

A mobile provider, for example, can take five samples from a nursing home, three of which are for one hospital and two for another, and immediately print the correct instrument-ready and barcoded label for each patient, then track the orders back to the correct source and corresponding physician or facility.

eMyLabCollect eliminates relabeling and transcription errors and cuts time in receiving processes at the lab, according to Steve Ayer, CEO at Rhodes Group. “We have built a partnership with InterSystems that grows and adjusts with us as the company grows and adjusts to new market needs.” InterSystems partner Sebrio Consulting assisted in the project.

Supporting features of eMyLab Collect, in addition to HL7 feeds, include a message model with built-in transformations between modern and legacy formats regardless of source; scalability and distributing data among multiple machines without having to re-architect; and flexibility to move to another cloud or on-premise without sacrificing speed or performance.
