Intermountain, CHIME to collaborate with global health IT leaders

Organizations to work together in Intermountain’s new 120,000-square-foot Transformation Center.

Intermountain Healthcare and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives have teamed to transform medical care by collaborating with innovative health IT leaders worldwide.

As part of the new 120,000-square-foot Kem C. Gardner Intermountain Transformation Center, which will house multiple institutes, the Utah-based not-for-profit health system is partnering with the CHIME Innovation Center to identify transformative HIT ideas, technologies and investment opportunities across the globe and to help bring them to market quickly and cost effectively.

“We have an extensive global reach with 3,000 members around the world,” says Keith Fraidenburg, CHIME’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “Intermountain is widely recognized as an innovative health system always striving to push healthcare forward, whether that’s on the IT front or clinical practices. We work really well together and have a common core mission of improving healthcare through the practical application of technologies and solutions. It’s just a natural fit.”

Fraidenburg notes that CHIME will have a physical presence in the Transformation Center, located on the campus of Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. While that space is not quite ready and is currently being built out, he adds that it will be very “high tech” and will host educational programs and innovation facilitation workshops at Intermountain’s state-of-the-art center.

“This space is going to be really cool and high tech,” boasts Fraidenburg. “In fact, our expectation is that it will feature some of the greatest technologies in the entire Intermountain Transformation Center, which is saying a lot having had the opportunity to personally tour the center.”

According to Intermountain, an existing Innovation Lab at its Transformation Center will leverage 3D technology to print copies of patient organs, enabling surgeons to better perform life-altering surgeries. In addition, the Institute for Healthcare Leadership—led by Intermountain president emeritus Charles Sorenson, MD—will offer leadership training courses for medical professionals, including a simulation center where clinicians can practice care scenarios using virtual technology.

“We are stewards of Intermountain’s long tradition of innovation, and this Transformation Center will be a hotbed, locally, regionally, nationally and globally as we seek to advance that tradition,” said Marc Harrison, MD, president and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare, in a written statement.

“Everyone is talking about emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, virtual reality, augmented reality and blockchain—but what do they really mean in a healthcare IT context?” adds Fraidenburg. “That’s where the CHIME Innovation Center activities (at the Intermountain Transformation Center) can help explore how to not only better understand some of these technologies, but how to apply them practically in a solution-oriented context in healthcare organizations.”
