A new report from research firm IDC Health Insights evaluates 11 electronic health records products from nine U.S.-based vendors serving the small physician practice market.

Five market leaders were selected for evaluation along with others “offering compelling technology, strategies or services,” according to the report. The vendors are ADP AdvancedMD, Allscripts, athenahealth, eClincialWorks, Greenway Medical Technologies, LSS (Meditech), Lumeris, Optum (OptumInsight) and PracticeFusion.

The research is intended to help providers select an appropriate EHR to reach long-term goals, not just qualify for meaningful use incentive payments, says Judy Hanover, IDC Health Insights research director.

“If providers allow the constraints of meaningful use to dictate their technology choices and limit the goals for implementation, they may only see the short-term incentives and not the long-term strategic advantage that EHR can bring to their practices and may fail to compete under healthcare reform.”

The report, IDC MarketScape: US Ambulatory EMR/EHR for Small Practices 2012,” is available for purchase here.
