Farzad Mostashari, M.D., former national coordinator for health information technology, has joined the vendor ranks and is bringing a former top ONC aide with him.

Mostashari is the CEO at startup company Aledade, based in Bethesda, Md., with the goal of helping primary care physicians form and succeed in accountable care organizations. Other top leaders include executive vice president Mat Kendall, who led ONC’s regional extension center program to aid physicians in becoming meaningful users; and chief technology officer Edwin Miller, who served in product leadership positions with physician vendors digiChart, athenahealth and CareCloud, among others.

Backed by $4.5 million from the Venrock investment firm, Aledade offers a range of professional and technology services to give physicians an affordable entry into ACOs. The services include understanding and complying with regulations, redesigning practices, optimizing electronic health records and workflows, improving quality reporting, creating and monitoring referral networks, patient outreach and communications, and using data analytics for practice and provider performance benchmarking, identification and management of at-risk patients, among other functions.

Mostashari joined the Brookings Institution in the fall of 2013 and in a blog says he had the fortune to learn from great thinkers and visit providers across the nation. “I have come away with a rare stereoscopic view of the changes sweeping through health care--the anxiety of those with ‘one foot on their old business model’s grave and the other foot on their new business model’s banana peel,’ mingled with the excitement of those who would disrupt the status quo,” he writes. “And during this process, I have also found my cause.”
