EHR Initiative Launched for Drug Safety, Medication Adherence

At HIMSS12, a coalition of industry stakeholders, including nine electronic health records vendors, launched an initiative to integrate drug information into EHRs.

The information includes access to up-to-date, FDA-approved labeling and delivery of time-sensitive drug alerts via EHRs; integrating drug event reporting into EHRs and other systems; and providing drug information and medication adherence tools to patients via patient portals.

Stakeholders in the initiative, called PDR BRIEF, are PDR Network, which distributes FDA and Physicians’ Desk Reference information; The Doctors Co., a malpractice insurer; the FDA; and vendors Allscripts, Greenway Medical Technologies, athenahealth, e-MDs, OfficeAlly, Connexin Software, First Medical Solutions Corp., Universal E.H.R. Solutions and OmniMD.

PDR also announced that CVS Caremark will implement its RxEvent adverse drug event reporting system in its more than 7,000 pharmacies across the United States.
