Berwick Leaving CMS, Tavenner to Succeed Him

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Donald Berwick, M.D., will leave his position on Dec. 2.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Donald Berwick, M.D., will leave his position on Dec. 2.

President Obama has announced he will nominate Marilyn Tavenner, principal deputy administrator at CMS, to succeed Berwick. She served as acting administrator from February to July 2010 when Obama tapped Berwick in a recess appointment while Congress was out of session.

Berwick's departure from CMS was expected. Republican lawmakers would not confirm him, so the recess appointment meant his term would last until the end of 2011.
