Availity LLC, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based claims clearinghouse, has enhanced its capabilities by acquiring RealMed, which operates a clearinghouse headquartered in Indianapolis. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
RealMed brings Availity enhanced technological capabilities and a second business model, says Julie Klapstein, CEO. Availity, for instance, offers limited claims editing, claims tracking and remittance posting functions, while RealMed's services are much more comprehensive. RealMed also offers online claims correction capability.
Availity has traditionally offered its electronic data interchange services free to providers. RealMed has offered its portal-based premium services to providers via a subscription. Now, the combined company will offer both business models. Together, the clearinghouses serve more than 200,000 physicians and other providers, 1,000 hospitals, and 1,300 health plans.
