DC-area HIE boosts patient matching capabilities
Verifying those who access different providers seen as key, says David Horrocks.
Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients, a health information exchange serving Maryland and Washington, DC, is implementing cloud-hosted patient matching software from Verato Inc.
HIEs without the technology must manually review and match each patient that master data management or master patient index technologies cannot automatically match, which is a tedious process that also can be prone to error.
“Our mission is to enable our healthcare community to share data to provide better care, reduce costs and improve health outcomes,” David Horrocks, President of CRISP, said in a statement. “But this ability to share data relies on our ability to identify the same patient across every provider where they have received care.”

While testing the Verato technology, CRISP found it could match many of the most difficult identification efforts, such as those missing dates of birth or phone numbers. Further, matches could be made in real-time, enabling patients to immediately be placed in appropriate workflows.
CRISP is the third health information exchange to contract with the vendor, following San Diego Health Connect and Healthix, which serves New York City and Long Island.
