Athenahealth buy of Arsenal Health aims at better scheduling

Arsenal’s tech looks for potential no-shows to reduce missed appointments, says Doran Robinson.


Ambulatory care software vendor Athenahealth is purchasing Arsenal Health, a vendor that offers scheduling products that are intended to help physician practice clients schedule patient appointments more efficiently and easily.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Arsenal Health’s technology uses machine learning technology to analyze data on patient behavior, and identify patterns and outcomes that can be used to predict which patients will not show up for an appointment or cancel.

By predicting no-shows and cancellations, practices can double-book appointments to maintain or increase the number of actual patient appointments, says Doran Robinson, vice president of athenaCoordinator, a service that supports care coordination and transitions in care.

Arsenal Health’s offerings can predict no-shows and cancellations because it has access to athenahealth data to correlate patient attributes to make the predictions, which Robinson says have a high degree of accuracy.

With some of Athenahealth’s physician clients still sending faxes, the Arsenal Health machine learning technology also is being used to appropriately label patient documents and link the documents to the appropriate patient.

Arsenal Health in 2014 was Athenahealth’s first investment via its More Disruption Please accelerator program, developed to mentor start-up vendors; as a result, it benefited from having access to Athenahealth’s resources and customer base. Starting with one customer, Arsenal Health now serves more than 700 providers.

Later this year, Athenahealth will roll out the predictive analytics service to all 75,000 of its provider customers.
