Steps to Take After a Data Breach

In the three years since it required public reporting of health care data breaches affecting more than 500 individuals, the HHS Office for Civil Rights has 345 incidents listed on its Web site. In addition, the OCR was notified of more than 25,000 smaller breaches in 2010 alone.

Following is a walk-though of what to do after a data breach occurs, provided by Mahmood Sher-Jan, senior director of product management at ID Experts, a Portland, Ore.-based data breach prevention and remediation firm.
