Where the top EMR vendors are strongest

The top electronic medical records vendors have a large share of the big hospital market, according to KLAS’s “US Hospital EMR Market Share 2017” report. Here are summaries from KLAS researchers on market trends for each vendor and on the size of hospitals at which their products are being used.

Allscripts

Allscripts saw slight net increases in their hospital EMR customer base over the past two years. In its research, KLAS says about 70 percent of customers “report that Allscripts is part of their long-term plans.”

Number of hospitals using products: 183, 3.5 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

athenahealth

KLAS says athenahealth saw the third largest net increase in hospital customers, being selected mainly by critical access and other smaller hospitals, with up to 25 beds.

Number of hospitals using products: 82, 1.6 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

Cerner

Research by KLAS shows that Cerner increased their market footprint in 2016. Cerner contracted with fewer integrated delivery networks than Epic, “but those IDN contracts involved more total hospitals.

Number of hospitals using products: 1,303, 24.7 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

CPSI

CPSI has an estimated market share of 11 percent, KLAS estimates. CPSI’s traditional market strength has been in the stand-alone hospital market, and it’s also been strong in the small facility market.

Number of hospitals using products: 572, 10.8 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

Epic

KLAS research indicates that Epic has shown the most growth in among hospital customers for the past six years.

Number of hospitals using products: 1,363, 25.8 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

McKesson

Early adopters of McKesson’s Paragon have reported improvements in the hospital platform, KLAS says, but Paragon users tell KLAS they are concerned that its ambulatory functionality has not been released yet.

Number of hospitals using products: 243, 4.6 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

MEDHOST

KLAS says MEDHOST has struggled to maintain market share in the last two years.

Number of hospitals using products: 213, 4.0 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

MEDITECH

Research by KLAS has found that providers showed increased interest in MEDITECH Web, its web-based product.

Number of hospitals using products: 877, 16.6 percent of the nation’s hospitals.
