How ‘Shadow Data’ Imperils Your Cloud Apps
Trouble lurks in the shadows for healthcare providers that knowingly or unwittingly upload otherwise protected data to the cloud; when it’s shared from the cloud, it can result in potential regulatory compliance violations and introduce security risks. Organizations from many industries have sent this so-called “shadow data” through cloud apps, says Elastica, a cloud platform vendor that provides services to several industries. Elastica used anonymized and aggregated data to assess the degree to which clients unknowingly have shadow data in their cloud apps. The biggest offenders, surprisingly, were in healthcare.
