A Look at the 2012 First Quarter HIT Vendor Acquisitions

Health Data Management tracked 30 health information technology acquisitions during the first quarter of 2012. There were no blockbuster deals, but quite a few involved well-known ancillary vendors or represented new directions for the buyer. Here is a look at those sales.

Jumping into Health

Government contractor ManTech International Corp. entered the health I.T. arena with the acquisition of fellow contractor Evolvent Technologies Inc. Evolvent provides EHR/diagnostic imaging implementation, data warehouse/analytics, telemedicine, vendor selection, integration, and security services to the Departments of Health and Human Services, Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Embracing Patient Self-Service

Hospital ancillary vendor Quadra Med Corp. bought the patient self-service products of NCR Corp., including the MediKiosk self-registration devices, card payment services, and a patient portal to pre-register, check in and pay bills. The buy is a logical extension of QuadraMed’s patient access and identity management products, says CEO Duncan James.

Improving Encounter Services

Payer vendor TriZetto Group picked up Medical Data Express, which processes encounter data for Medicare and Medicaid plans. The acquisition expands TriZetto’s services to government health plans, particularly with establishment of Medicare Advantage plans.

Mixing the Schedule to Patient Needs

Workforce staffing software firm Kronos targeted acuity-based scheduling capabilities by acquiring OptiLink from The Advisory Board. With such clients as Intermountain Healthcare, Tenet Healthcare Corp. and Seton Family Healthcare, OptiLink’s products help align staffing levels to actual patient needs.

A Counter Move

Soon after the Kronos buy, another workforce vendor, API Healthcare, expanded its customer base by picking up veteran firm Concerro, which sells hosted scheduling software that also tracks licensing and credentialing. Kronos actually tried to buy API in 2011, but a revolt by API customers killed the deal.

Getting Ready for ACOs

Three Northeast Blues plans--Highmark, Horizon and Independence--joined with vendor Lumeris to buy financial/clinical transactions processor NaviNet, which has substantial market share among physicians. Lumeris sells a cloud- based accountable care delivery platform to collect, aggregate and analyze data from ACOs and other new care delivery programs to assess strengths and weaknesses of potential provider partners.

Expanding a Transcription Empire

Medical transcription services and software vendor Nuance Communications paid about $300 million for transcription firm Transcend Services. Nuance will market its dictation, speech recognition and natural language processing software to Transcend clients. Nuance also gets additional technology capabilities, such as charge capture software.

Passport Expands to Scheduling

Revenue cycle management vendor Passport Health Communications bought enterprise scheduling firm STAT Technologies. The pick-up of scheduling software covering inpatient, outpatient and surgical areas will enable Passport hospital clients to begin revenue cycle functions at the point an order is received from a physician office, says CEO Scott MacKenzie. Passport will continue to integrate other scheduling products with its services and expects more buys this year.

Entering New Markets

Hospital ancillary vendor Mediware made two buys to enter new markets, buying Transtem LLC offering software to manage collection and transplantation of adult stem cells, and acquiring chemotherapy management software sold in Europe. The company has also been evaluating oncology software in the United States.

Offering Value-Add Services

T-System Inc., which sells electronic and paper-based documentation systems for emergency departments, bought coding vendor Clinical Coding Solutions and outsourced ED billing/collections firm Practice Management Associates.
