Content publisher Hearst Corp. will expand its health care product line by acquiring Milliman Care Guidelines LLC for an undisclosed sum.

Hearst owns clinical decision support vendor Zynx Health that serves physicians and nurses, and drug reference vendor First Databank. Now, it will add medical treatment necessity guidelines used by insurers covering more than 140 million lives, as well as 1,200 hospitals. The acquisition also better positions Hearst to serve accountable care organizations.

The Milliman guidelines cover ambulatory, acute, post-acute, home health, chronic disease management and behavioral health settings. A new auto-authorization platform enables insurers to focus on complex cases requiring manual review while speeding routine cases and letting hospitals quickly know that they will be paid for the services rendered, according to the company.
