Twenty years after the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange issued the WEDI Report that ushered in the HIPAA standards to automate health care administrative and financial transactions, the group has released a roadmap to guide the next generation of health information exchange. More than 200 volunteer stakeholders worked throughout 2013 to identify opportunities, challenges and action plans for four areas: Patient Engagement, Innovative Encounter Models, Data Harmonization and Exchange, and Payment Models. The 122-page 2013 WEDI Report includes 10 recommendations supported with short-term, mid-term and long-term action plans for the four areas. Here are the recommendations with core elements of the action plan for each area.
