Web Tool to Track Physician Shortages

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will develop a Web-based tool to track physician workforce needs across the nation.

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will develop a Web-based tool to track physician workforce needs across the nation.

The project is funded through a $750,000 grant from The Physicians Foundation in Boston, sponsored by 20 medical societies and founded through a 2003 class action settlement against insurers. The tool will use data from multiple sources including the American Medical Association and the Centers for Medicare and Management Services.

The goal is to estimate physician supply and demand within specified geographies and/or specialties, and how policy changes could affect projections. Additional information on the foundation is at physiciansfoundation.org.
