Virginia HIT, the state's regional technology extension center to aid physicians in adopting electronic health records, has named three preferred EHR vendors.

The selected firms met specific criteria covering remotely hosted technology, cost and service. The vendors are Chicago-based Allscripts, New York-based MDLand.com, and Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth Inc. The EHR from athenahealth is not sold on a standalone basis, but bundled with the vendor's practice management software and outsourced billing/collections services.
