Some 104 organizations including 95 software vendors are participating in the 11th Annual IHE North American Connectathon this week in Chicago, testing the ability of their products to transmit patient data to disparate information systems.

Sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the Radiological Society of North America, Connectathon is a prelude to the Interoperability Showcase at the 2010 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, March 1-4 in Atlanta. Vendors must participate in the Connectathon to demonstrate at the Interoperability Showcase.

San Ramon, Calif.-based Nextrials Inc., for instance, will test interoperability of its clinical trials data capture technology with electronic health record systems. Carrollton, Ga.-based Greenway Medical Technologies Inc. will conduct tests with several other vendors. The company, for instance, will test transferring an antepartum summary, a summary of a pregnant woman's prenatal treatment, to a health information exchange, which can be accessed by a hospital information system.
