Vanderbilt University Medical Center plans a massive replacement of software, moving to a unified approach with a wide range of applications from health IT systems vendor Epic.

The Nashville, Tenn., delivery system plans to implement key clinical, administrative and billing software. The organization said it expects staff and faculty to switch to Epic applications in November 2017 for medical record keeping and clinical workflow; ordering tests and treatments in hospitals and clinics; scheduling; admissions; nursing documentation; and for other purposes.

Vanderbilt executives said the organization decided to look for a new software provider after its current vendor, McKesson Corp., indicated that it would stop supporting applications that VUMC uses for clinician order entry, nurse documentation, medication administration and pharmacy management.

A press release from VUMC said the Epic applications also will replace some of the clinical systems it uses, which were self-developed.

About 700 staff and faculty participated in a review of information system needs and helped assess the software being considered for selection, eventually picking Epic over applications from Cerner.
