The American Telemedicine Association has presented the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs with an award for innovation in the advancement of telemedicine.

The departments jointly developed the PTSD Coach, a post-traumatic stress disorder mobile app that runs on iPhone and Android devices. Released in April 2011, the free app has been downloaded 53,000 times in 60 nations, according to the departments.

The app offers access to education, symptoms-tracking tools, self-assessments and support organizations. The VA since 2007 has experienced a 35 percent increase in veterans receiving mental health services and a 41 percent hike in mental health staff.
