The Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are expanding to the Tidewater area of southeast Virginia pilot tests to share patient data among their information systems.
The departments since late 2009 in San Diego have been testing data exchange among their systems and those of Kaiser Permanente facilities in the region. Now, the departments will partner with Tidewater-area hospitals that have joined a health information exchange. The region was selected because of its high concentration of veterans, active service members, military retirees, and members of the National Guard and Reserve, according to the departments.
The pilot will launch this year and service members and veterans in the region are invited to participate.
