System Combines Pathology & PACS

Medical imaging software vendor Agfa HealthCare is testing in France an integrated digital pathology/picture archiving and communications systems.

The technology is implemented at La Pitie-Salpetriere, a 1,600-bed teaching hospital in Paris. It includes a whole-slide scanner coupled with workstations, combining digital pathology and radiology images on the same image management system.

When a pathologist selects regions of interest, the images are automatically integrated into Agfa's IMPAX PACS platform. Among other benefits, this enables easier collaboration among multidisciplinary clinical teams. "Combining radiology and pathology images represents a critical step toward integrated diagnosis where a multi-disciplinary approach and sub-specialization are highly used, such as in a large teaching hospital," says Professor Philippe Grenier, head of radiology at La Pitie-Salpetriere.

Agfa expects its digital pathology system to be available sometime in 2012.
