Health Level Seven announced availability in March of the implementation guide for the new “greenCDA” version of its Clinical Document Architecture that supports clinical messaging and Continuity of Care Documents.

The greenCDA version uses simplified XML for CDA documents, enabling any developer with basic knowledge of XML to easily implement HL7-supported exchange of data. “Not all organizations need the richness and complexity of CDA,” said Chuck Jaffe, M.D., CEO at HL7. With greenCDA, the footprint of CDA is smaller, is as the transmission bandwidth, “and it’s easier to write the code,” he said. “It’s plain vanilla XML.”

Further, greenCDA supports the federal government’s push to make health data exchange simple “and think of the little guy,” Jaffe added.
