Swiss drug and diagnostics manufacturing firm Roche will acquire BioImagene Inc., a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based vendor of digital pathology workflow and analysis software, for $100 million.
BioImagene's technology creates high-resolution digital images from glass microscope slides. It enables image capture, information management, image analysis and virtual sharing of tissue samples on glass slides, according to the companies. The acquisition complements Roche's existing image analysis and management products.
BioImagene will become part of the Ventana Medical Systems tissue diagnostics division of Roche. BioImagene was one of several organizations that a year ago formed the Digital Pathology Association, an advocacy group to offer educational programs, define best practices, and influence development of standards and interfaces.
