Reform Law Grants to Improve Lab, Disease Tracking Efforts

The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded laboratory and epidemiology improvement grants totaling $48.8 million across the nation and some territories.


The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded laboratory and epidemiology improvement grants totaling $48.8 million across the nation and some territories.

Funded under the Affordable Care Act, the grants will support improved disease reporting and monitoring, new information technology systems, and new lab equipment and supplies for diagnosing emerging pathogens. Grants went to all 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Republic of Palau, and New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston.

Grantees will receive funding to reduce health care-associated infections, develop electronic health records meaningful use capability to improve information exchange, and better support epidemiology and laboratory staff with improved equipment and training. More information is available here.
