Health insurer Anthem Inc. has begun offering two free years of identity repair and credit monitoring services, including a $1 million identity theft insurance policy, for up to an estimated 80 million individuals affected by its huge data breach from a hacking attack.

AllClear ID is the vendor of protective services. In a new notice released the evening of Feb. 27, Anthem continues to believe that there was no compromise of credit card, banking and medical information.

However, data that may have been breached remains a treasure for identity thieves and includes names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home and email addresses, healthcare ID numbers, and employment data including income information.

Anthem will notify all known affected persons of the protective services via U.S. postal mail. These include current and former members—as well as members of 14 independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans that receive certain Anthem services.

The company is warning affected individuals of email scams designed to appear as coming from Anthem, asking for information and including a “click here” link for credit monitoring. The emails are not from Anthem and recipients should not reply to them, click any links or open any attachments. Anthem also is not calling affected individuals by telephone and is not asking for credit card information or Social Security numbers.

Anthem companies affected by the breach include Amerigroup, Anthem and Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield companies, Caremore and Unicare, according to the notice. Other Blues plans affected, with members covered by Anthem’s protective services, include plans in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

More information for affected individuals is available here. An HDM special report on the breach can be found here.
