Sixteen critical access hospitals in late 2007 received a total of $25 million in federal grants to develop information technology pilot networks to improve coordination of care in their communities.

Now, as critical access hospitals and other rural facilities focus on meaningful use of electronic health records, lessons from the pilot networks form the base for a new Primer on HIT Adoption in the Rural Health Care Setting from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Office of Rural Health Policy.

Stages of I.T. adoption covered in the primer include engagement, selection, planning, implementation and meaningful use. The primer is available here.
