Health information exchange software vendor Orion Health has acquired Microsoft Corp.'s hospital information system and RIS/PACS that are marketed in Southeast Asia.

The vendors also will jointly market Orion Health's HIE product and Microsoft's Amalga data aggregation, analysis and reporting software to public and private HIEs, as well as accountable care organizations.

Microsoft bought the HIS and PACS in 2007 and announced in July 2010 that it would discontinuing marketing the products but would support existing users for at least five years. At that time, the company had between five and 10 customers. Terms of the sale to Orion Health were not disclosed.

Orion Health believes the hospital products, combined with its HIE capabilities, gives it a complete solution to market throughout the Asia Pacific region, says CEO Ian McCrae.
