The Office of the National Coordinator for HIT has named Lucia Savage, senior associate general counsel at UnitedHealthcare, as its new chief privacy officer effective Oct. 20.

Savage succeeds Kathryn Marchesini, who has served as acting CPO since Joy Pritts left ONC in April. Marchesini will return to her post as privacy branch chief at ONC.

Savage has served at UHC for nearly seven years and previously held counsel posts at the Pacific Business Group on Health and at PacAdvantage, which operated a “purchasing pool” for California employers seeking health insurance coverage. She also served for eight years as compliance manager at Stanford University.

Savage has expertise in HIPAA implementation, health information exchanges, health insurance exchanges, health care transparency initiatives, health industry regulation, data transactions and health reform, according to ONC. Specific expertise that she has in heath privacy and security issues was not immediately available from ONC.
