Philips Healthcare has introduced clinical decision support technology to automatically detect when a maternal pulse may be confused with a fetal heart rate without applying additional electrodes or sensors.

The Avalon Smart Pulse system has been marketed overseas since May 2010 and now is available in the United States. The system continuously compares the maternal pulse and the fetal heart rate and also serves as a back up for electrodes or sensors that may disconnect or are not being used.

Smart Pulse connects to the vendor's OB TraceVue, an obstetrical surveillance and information management system. More information is available here.
