The federal National Institute of Standards and Technology has published two guides to help electronic health records vendors improve the usability of their products.

NIST Guide to the Processes Approach for Improving the Usability of Electronic Health Records provides guidance on using "user-centered-design" processes throughout an EHR product life cycle, according to the agency.

Customized Common Industry Format Template for Electronic Health Record Usability Testing provides a standard reporting format for testing EHR systems.

The publications are available at nist.gov/itl/hit/index.cfm.
