The American Academy of Family Physicians has promoted Jason Mitchell, M.D., to director of its Center for Health IT.

The center promotes adoption and optimal use of electronic health records and other information technologies, offering a range of services including information and consulting resources, tools such as an EHR review and selection application, discounted pricing from vendors, and networking with other physicians. The center also helps family physicians improve care coordination through adoption of accountable care organizations and medical homes.

Mitchell succeeds Steven Waldren, M.D., who sought a part-time position to focus on other endeavors, including New Health Networks, a Seminole, Fla.-based consultancy he co-founded in November 2012. Waldren now is a senior health I.T. strategist at AAFP.

Mitchell has been assistant director of the Center for Health IT since 2007 and is a practicing physician at Shared Care Free Clinic of Jackson County in Independence, Mo. The clinic offers a medical home for low-income and uninsured adults with chronic conditions. More information is at
