An implementation guide now is available for electronically reporting laboratory results using the Direct Project secure messaging protocols.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology formed a working group to develop the guide. Members included representatives of the Direct Project, the HHS Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) program, Lab Corp., Quest Diagnostics, the College of American Pathologists, Methodist Hospital of Omaha and Pathology Inc.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services intends to issue guidance, in the form of CLIA frequently asked questions, on the new lab messaging capabilities. The implementation guide is available here.
