New Cloud Service Targets Healthcare Entities

Cloud computing vendor Carpathia is seeking beta sites for its new Healthcare Community Cloud Service (HCCS) that will be restricted to covered entities under HIPAA.

Cloud computing vendor Carpathia is seeking beta sites for its new Healthcare Community Cloud Service (HCCS) that will be restricted to covered entities under HIPAA.

HCCS, which will require two-factor authorization, is built on a platform using technology from EMC and VMware, and includes virtualization technology so clients can use the same interface that they use for internal clouds. That means workflows can move to the HCCS cloud and administrators can use the same tools they already have.

The beta  will run for about 60 days, with an expectation that the service will become generally available in late spring, says Phil Hedlund, vice president of business operations at Carpathia.

Carpathia will enter into HIPAA business associate agreements with customers of HCCS, and is open to accepting customer BAAs. Almost always, Hedlund says, the company is able to accommodate the BAA.
