Minnesota HIE Automates Connections to Social Security

HIE-Bridge, a Minnesota state-certified health information organization that operates a patient records locator system throughout Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, is using software from ApeniMED to automate data exchange with the Social Security Administration.

The Minneapolis-based vendor's NHIN Platform enables the transmission of a Continuity of Care Document to the SSA when the agency requests information to verify disability claims. SSA requests more than 15 million records nationally each year and processes more than 3 million claims annually.

Most records are sent via the mail or fax, but SSA is working with several health information exchanges and other vendors to automate the process.
