The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has transmitted to the Office of Management and Budget a final rule to implement the Medicare Shared Savings Program, a form of accountable care organizations authorized under the health reform law.

OMB review is one of the last steps before a rule is officially published in the Federal Register. The Affordable Care Act required establishment of the shared savings program by Jan. 1, 2012.

Under the program, participating providers will share in savings generated from an ACO by meeting certain quality improvement and cost reduction benchmarks.
