McKesson Corp. will give away a free 26-month license of its Practice Choice practice management/electronic health records software to 100 physicians providing charity care in 10 cities with high levels of impoverished residents.

The selected cities are: Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Newark, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

The Web-based software generally goes for $399 per physician per month. The value of the software being given away exceeds $1 million. The modules operate on a single database and are designed for small independent primary care practices.

The software is certified under Stage 1 of the EHR meaningful use program. A broadband or high-speed Internet connection is required. More information is available here.
