The Iowa Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center has named six electronic health records companies as preferred vendors for primary care practices.

The center is one of 60 being implemented across the nation, funded with stimulus dollars, to aid providers in adopting information technologies. Iowa's center expects to help at least 1,200 physicians, physician's assistants and nurse practitioners in practices of 10 or fewer providers to use EHRs and comply with federal meaningful use criteria during the next two years.

The center's preferred vendors are Allscripts, eClinicalWorks Inc., EHS Inc., eMDs Inc., Greenway Medical Technologies Inc. and McKesson Corp.  The endorsement is intended to help practices that do not have the time or resources to conduct their own vendor evaluations, says Kim Downs, senior director of operations for the Iowa extension center. "We provide consultation and technical assistance. The purchase decision remains with the individual practice."
