Newton, Mass.-based lifeIMAGE, vendor of a Web-based, on-demand medical image exchange platform, has raised $11.8 million in a private financing round.

Participants in the financing included Cardinal Partners and Galen Partners, with both investment firms now represented on the board. The vendor will use the proceeds to expand operations and strategic partnerships for its technology that is targeted to hospitals, physician practices and patients.

For instance, lifeIMAGE recently integrated its image exchange network with Microsoft HealthVault's personal health records technology. This enables physicians to share imaging exams and associated reports with patients who have a HealthVault account. It also enables patients to share the images and reports with other physicians if they seek a second opinion.
