Arien Malec has resigned his position within the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to return to the private sector.

Malec served as coordinator of the Direct Project that developed free, secure e-mail software, and of ONC's Standards and Interoperability Framework unit.

He came to ONC from the RelayHealth unit of McKesson Corp. for a nine-month gig that lasted 18 months. Malec is based on the West Coast and the heavy travel has been tough on his family, according an ONC blog entry. Now, he will return to Relay Health as vice president of clinical reporting and analytics solutions.

"Sometimes people read too much into decisions like this, so to be completely clear, I am not making this decision because I disagree with anything that is currently happening," he wrote.

Jitin Asnaani will serve as coordinator of ONC's S&I Framework and interim coordinator for the Direct. Asnaani has been a coordinator for two S&I initiatives and has helped state health information exchanges implement the Direct software.
