Sharp HealthCare and the Foundation for Health Coverage Education during HIMSS13 will present an educational session on how Sharp gets uninsured patients coverage when seeking care in an emergency department.

Sharp uses the foundation’s free Eligibility Quiz software to identify coverage options that a patient may qualify for through a five-question quiz that takes about 90 seconds. More than 80 percent of quizzed patients have been found to not be enrolled in a coverage program they were eligible for. Sharp provided enrollment assistance and patient education, and tweaked admitting protocols and financial systems to include enrollment and coverage data.

Consequently, Sharp has collected millions of dollars in additional reimbursement from insurers and patients during the past three years, according to the organization. FHCE in September 2012 launched a new for-profit company, PointCare, to commercialize the service.

Education Session 18, “How Hospitals Can Improve their Bottom Line and Relationships with Uninsured Patients,” is scheduled on March 4 at 9:45 a.m. in Room 347.
