The Greater Houston Health Information Exchange became operational in December following successful data exchanges between two group practices using the federally sponsored Direct Project protocols for secure clinical messaging.
Three-site Northwest Diagnostic Clinic and Digestive & Liver Disease Consultants participated in the data exchange. The not-for-profit HIE is a collaborative of the Harris County Healthcare Alliance, a coalition of providers; and the Center for Houston’s Future, with brings together community and business organizations to facilitate regional strategic planning.
The HIE was founded in mid-2010 with plans to support a communitywide provider directory, referrals and reports, emergency and hospital discharge summaries, electronic prescriptions, test orders and results, and a PACS repository for storage/transfer of images.
The HIE’s board includes senior leadership of Christus Health Systems, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, Harris County Hospital District, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine and the Harris County Medical Society, among others. More information is available at ghhie.org.
